Behind the Music X: Plot Of My Revenge
This is part 10 of an 11-part series. Guile takes a whimsical journey down memory lane, retracing the bumpy pseudo-pathways that led to the final version of Hastang’s current tracks.
- A classic rock riff I wrote that was actually accepted by the group (I’m not that hopeless after all)! This is also the first song that Tessa and I co-wrote together (with Yan providing the poetry, Tessa weaving melodies out of nowhere and me playing catch-up trying to figure out the appropriate chord progression). Later, we would employ this songwriting style to Oblivion, Deep Descent, Random, Old Lovers’ Mantra, Drowned, and Waiting for Murray.
- The words, according to Yan, were written amid anger and frustration. Yup, you guessed it, she wrote the lyrics while warring with her boyfriend, Mark, who also happens to be Hastang’s drummer. There’s an original (angrier?) version of the song that she refuses to show to anyone. Suffice it to say that “the plot” is not what it seems to be. Whatever that means.
Plot of My Revenge
Lyrics by Julie Ann
Yan Redoble
Music & Arrangement by HastangThis here is the plot of my revenge.
I will rise from the depths of this crater,
Crawl into the sunshine with head held high;
Embrace the dawn with an imperial poise;
Soon this crumbling wall, I shall fortify.This is the plot of my revenge.
I will bury this cast-off soul,
And wake the goddess within me.
Free myself from this anguished role.
Divine searing flame, I will be.That is my revenge.
That is my revenge.
I will be a shrine of cunning desire.
You’re a figment of my non-existent past,
Reduced to tiny specks of tarnished dust.
To the ends of black void, you will be cast.This is the plot of my revenge.
I’ve become a ghost in your past,
A memory, a shadow of what once was.But this woman will have her revenge.
I will have my revenge…
I will have my revenge.
Hastang is a Cebu-based, female-fronted indie band composed of members Ria (vocals), Guile (bass), Gaw (guitars), and Makoy (drums).
