Tuesday with Murray

Once again, we found ourselves inside the four walls of Handuraw’s jamming studio last Tuesday night as we tried to give the song “Mid-flight” the full band treatment (the first of many jamming sessions—I predict!).
As I’ve said in the previous entry (see below), this song is going to need a lot of work given its time-signature-shifting structure. And with Murray in our side, we’re hoping he’ll be able to inject some style to this one.
And, boy, did he ever … although it wasn’t quite what we really expected.
The pre-chorus (or refrain—suit yourself) proved to be really tricky. So Makoy suggested that Murray do some “single-line” guitar licks for that part. Murray silently nods, then with cool poise, calmly strides behind me to form a single line (hehehe).
Makoy reiterates that in order to give the pre-chorus a heavier feel, he needs Murray to go with the drums. Murray walks up to Makoy’s side and declares with a straight face, “I’m with you, bai!”
You gotta love this guy. There’s more.
For the bridge part, we came up with break-ins—leaving little silent gaps in between chords so I asked Murray if he could do some guitar bending during the gaps. With a deadpan look of exasperation on his face, Murray asks back, “Bai, dili na straight ako gitara?”
You can just imagine what he did when I asked him to do running notes for the song’s outro.
That, my friends, is the unbearable lightness of being Murray.
P.S. Oh by the way, we did finish the song. It’ll be ready for PNB5 on Friday.
